Eugenio Recuenco

Eugenio Recuenco (Madrid, 1968), is a Spanish photographer and filmmaker. His personal style is often described as "cinematic" and "painterly".

Recipient of the ABC National Photography Award in 2004 for his series Conception, Childbirth, Play and Education, the Golden Lion at Cannes (Sleeping Beauty, Playstation, 2005), the Award for Best Advertising with Esencia de una Seducción, in 2008, and various awards at different international film festivals with his short film Manuscrit Trouvé dans L'Olubli, in 2016.

His most important personal project to date, 365, has been exhibited in Madrid, Berlin, Paris, Vitoria, Shanghai and Taipei and published in book form. </ p>

Eugenio Recuenco was born in Madrid in May 1968. He studied Fine Arts, graduating in painting at the Complutense University of Madrid. In the early stages of his career he specialized in large-format paintings, but soon turned to photography. He soon begins to take photographs for various fashion magazines, first in Spain and later in Paris, where he usually moves and where he spends long periods of time. Vogue Spain, Madame Figaro, Wad, Vogue UK, Spoon, Planet, Vanity Fair, Stern, Numero, Kult, GO or Zink are some of them.

It is in Paris where he does his first advertising job for Boucheron. From there, many brands will call on him to build their images: Nina Ricci, Diesel, Shanghai Tang, Yves Saint Laurent, Sony, Playstation, Custo, Le Bon Marché, BSI Lugano, Pernod Ricard, Canal +, Barceló Hotels , Puy De Fou, Dry Martini or Naf Naf are some of them.

In 2007 he was invited to make the Lavazza calendar and from the United States he was called to carry out, together with Eric Dover, the set design and staging of the opera “Les Huguenots” at The Fisher Center of New York.

It is also in Paris where he makes his first ad, this time for Nina Ricci (Nina). This recently launched path is quickly continued with other brands such as Loewe, Freixenet, Mango, Codorniú, Chivas Regal, Regione Campania, Vanderbilt, Motorola, Huawei, Bvlgary, Jean Paul Gaultier, El Corte Inglés, Nextel or Palacio Del Hierro.</p >

In 2008 his video “Esencia de una Seducción” won the award for best publicity of the year in Spain and the award for best short film at the International Film Week Ciudad de Mexico. Since then he has continued making short films and video clips such as “Mein Herz Brennt” for Rammstein.

Although he had already exhibited his photographs at the Reina Sofía National Art Museum in Madrid, at the BAC (Barcelona Contemporary Art), Naardeen Photo Festival, FEM (Madrid Edition Festival), Les Rencontres de Arles, PhotoEspaña, Art Toronto 2007 or the National Library of Spain; It is once again Paris where he holds his first solo exhibition, “Dream and Tempest”, at the Bertin-Toublanc Gallery.

In 2004 he received the ABC National Photography Award for his series Conception, Childbirth, Play and Education; in 2009 he wins gold and bronze at the Sol Festival and in 2005 and 2013 gold lions with his photographs at the Cannes Lions Festival.

In 2011, his films “88:88” and “Deseo” were screened in the official section at the ASVOFF, Fashion Film Festival at the CaixaForum in Barcelona.</p >

In 2012 she was also present in the official section of the San Francisco International Fashion Film Festival her film “Pure Beauty“, and once again collaborates in the Lavazza 2012 calendar. </ p >

In 2013 it was TeNeues who called on him to make his first solo book “REVUE”, whose launch coincided with a solo exhibition at the Camera Work Gallery in Berlin, in September 2013.

That same year his films “Pure Beauty” and “Aire” were screened in the official section of the 2013 Montreal Fashion Week Festival.

He closes 2013 being awarded for his photography “The little Prince 2013” in “Cannes” with the Golden Lion for best photography; with the Gold for best photography and best art direction in “El ojo de Iberoamérica”; With the Bronze Sun in "Sol" Ibero-American Festival of advertising communication; and bronze once again at the "FIAP" Ibero-American Advertising Festival.

In 2014 his films “88:88” and “Deseo” are exhibited in the auditorium of the FIT Museum in New York within a piece called “Narrations” within the framework of the conference "Hispanic-American Fashion Culture" organized by the Instituto Cervantes in New York.

The Museum Kunst Halle Rostcok, Germany, does a retrospective of his work in September of that year. His work was also present at Fotografiska, Stockholm. In October of the same year he participates in the exhibition that commemorates the 20th anniversary of the fashion magazine GQ “Man in Progress”.</ P>

In 2015 he participated in the 25th anniversary of the Deichtorhallem Hamburg foundation (Germany) with three works inspired by the work of the great artist who gives his name to the exhibition “PICASSO in Contemporary Art” also exhibited at the end of this year in Ohio (United States) at the Wexner Center for the Arts.

At the end of 2015 he is invited to collaborate in “Distinction” a retrospective on fashion photography for the Museu del Disseny in Barcelona. </ p>

In 2016 the FIT Museum in New York exhibited “Fairy Tale Fashion” including 3 works from that same series that will be included in a book with the same title that compiles all the works exhibited in the exhibition.

In 2016 he finished the short film as director of “Manuscrit Trouvé Dans L'Oubli”, based on the book by Alberto Méndez “Los Girasoles Ciegos“ with numerous awards at various Film Festivals international.

In September 2016 he is part of a collective exhibition at the CWC Gallery in Berlin under the title “Latest Finds“ with his latest works from the Gentifrications and Nocturnals series. p>

Recuenco has dedicated almost 8 years (2010-2018) to a personal photographic project called 365º, which consists of three hundred and sixty-nine photographs, one for each day of the year. With 369 images, 8 years of work, 120 models, a team of 300 people and the unique vision of Recuenco, this project takes a tour of the last 50 years of our time, it is a reflection of our virtues and imperfections as a society and as individuals. and a walk through the memories of the exceptional artist. The entire project was carried out within the same space. A very ambitious project, exhibited for the first time in its entirety and as an installation at CEART, the Tomás y Valiente Art Center in Fuenlabrada, Madrid, in 2018.

The “365” exhibition has been in the VITAL Foundation Room, in Vitoria, in the Camera Work gallery in Berlin, and in other cities such as Shanghai, Paris or Taipei.</ p>

Her next photographic project of his, “The Thousand and One Nights”, which he is currently working on, aims to be his biggest to date.

Currently, he lives behind a camera and continues directing spots and video clips for various brands and personalities. </ p>
